Whether elected or appointed to office, all circuit judges, judges of the Court of Appeals, and justices of the Supreme Court participate in AJRS. A judge or justice who becomes a member of the system on or after July 30, 1999, participates in the Tier Two Actual Judicial Service Retirement Plan (Tier Two).
Members participate in the system until they terminate their employment, at which time their membership ends. Except for the following instances, judges or justices must retire by their seventieth birthday or lose their retirement benefits:
- A judge or justice who becomes seventy (70) years of age during a term may complete the term and
- A judge or justice who is not eligible to retire at age seventy (70) can continue to serve until he or she attains sufficient service to retire.
Employer Responsibilities
Member enrollment consists of two primary functions: enrolling employees and maintaining demographic information. Employers must complete these functions whenever new judges and justices begin employment and whenever their demographic information changes.
Below are the specific employer responsibilities for member enrollment:
- Enroll employees
- Update demographic information
