Members receive credit for the service they render to public employers. Service credit is an essential factor in determining retirement eligibility and retirement benefit amounts. Retirement eligibility can be based on a member’s total credited service. Retirement benefits are based on a formula which factors credited service.
Three types of service credit exist: actual service, reciprocal service, and purchased service. The primary type of service, which is common to all members, is actual service. Members earn actual service credit while they render service to participating public employers. Members can also be credited with reciprocal service, which is service with another Arkansas state-authorized retirement system, and purchased service, which is service rendered to other governmental entities not covered under APERS or a reciprocal system.
